No-One Gives a Shit About Your Blog

today is not your day

No-one gives a shit about your blog. It’s official. There was a meeting. Didn’t you get the memo? Nobody cares what you think. It’s no longer a secret. No-one has to fake an interest in your problems, read your posts, click your affiliate links, look at ‘cute’ pictures of your cats, or listen to what you have to say. Life is short. People are busy. Leave them alone.

Oh, we know you’ve had your suspicions. But now, the cat is out of the bag and talking to the press. The world has had enough of you. Your friends are in on it too. They even paid someone to spell it out to you in words that you’d understand. And, because you’re so pretentious, they insisted that he write it as a poem:

We Who Are Your Closest Friends

We who are
your closest friends
feel the time
has come to tell you
that every Thursday
we have been meeting,
as a group,
to devise ways
to keep you
in perpetual uncertainty
frustration
discontent and
torture
by neither loving you
as much as you want
nor cutting you adrift.
Your analyst is
in on it,
plus your boyfriend
and your ex-husband;
and we have pledged
to disappoint you
as long as you need us.
In announcing our
association
we realize we have
placed in your hands
a possible antidote
against uncertainty
indeed against ourselves.
But since our Thursday nights
have brought us
to a community
of purpose
rare in itself
with you as
the natural center,
we feel hopeful you
will continue to make unreasonable
demands for affection
if not as a consequence
of your disastrous personality
then for the good of the collective.

Don’t worry what people think about you. Most of the time – they don’t. The world doesn’t give a shit about your opinions, but that doesn’t stop you from having them. And when I say you, I also mean me. The world is full of opinionated assholes. Discuss.

Writers are miserable when not writing. Writers are also miserable when writing, but at least that’s more productive. Writers write, right? And when it comes to blogging, there’s a very thin line between self-expression and self-indulgence which you’ll probably cross on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter. Just write. Stop looking for hugs.

Ahah, so true. If I wanted hugs, I’d just buy myself a stuffed animal 😉

  4. Awesome post! I also think some writers get too obsessed with their blogs so they spend more time posting than actually writing. *looks around guiltily* Some blogs are interesting and thought provoking, or at least entertaining, while others make you wonder why some people are allowed access to the Internet.

    Opinionated assholes, unite!

@Foiuyt: What’s the point of your existence?

  7. Oh, thank god! Because when I get down to “real” writing, I can’t be bothered keeping the silly blog up to date. And when I’m not writing, I want to spend my time planning my next “real” writing project, not frittering time away on a blog.

  8. Oh now that’s not fair, I was just about to post up some pics of kittens in amongst all of the computer stuff….

  9. Queen of Rants says:

You’re snarky. I like it! I like the in-your-face approach of your blog.

  10. Lilikka says:

Not quite what I wanted to hear, but definitely what I needed to hear. Hugs all around! (I’m joking, get back to writing.)

  11. Rumena says:

    ‘Writers write, right?’

This is great! I am in the middle of a big writing period these days, it’s a cure for the itch – I have a few readers, but even if I don’t, I just NEED to write…

I had the same a few years ago with photography – people didn’t need my photography – *I* needed it.

I love the aggressive tone of your blog. Calling things with their real names and writing from the heart.

  12. Tab says:

Hmmmm. Interesting! I guess my ego just wasn’t ready to be shattered today, I’m still optimistic that my blog matters! 😉 have a great one!

  13. Jennifer says:

Haha! It’s funny because I was all about to get up in arms like, “Fuck you, dude! I don’t give a shit about your blog, either!” *delete*

I love the message to continue writing and stop looking for hugs. I probably will forget this and want all of the hugs because I didn’t get enough of them as a child or something.

  14. Mzmackay says:

This was a great post. Just when I was thinking about whether or not to keep mine going. Thank you for expressing some of the thoughts I had tumbling around in my head.

  15. bondagebetty says:

Great blog post! Thanks for the reminder that my blog is more for myself then for other people. It doesn’t matter who is and isn’t reading my blog.

  16. woowooteacup says:

Brilliant! Humbling. And I gave a shit enough to read it. 🙂 Ironically, I found it through Twitter, which is possibly an even bigger venue for posting shit people don’t care about.
